Dibrugarh: Dibrugarh Police arrested alleged conman Imtiaz Ali from his residence near the road connecting Chiring Chapori and Amolapatty after breaking open the locked door of his house during an operation on Thursday. According to reports, Ali was allegedly hiding inside his residence with the doors locked. A large police team, acting in the presence of a magistrate, broke open the door and apprehended him. Police allege that Ali had collected crores of rupees from people by promising government and other jobs and offering shop allotments. Investigators also alleged that Ali had introduced himself at different times as a doctor, lawyer and other professionals. During the operation, police recovered three vehicles from his garage—a Mercedes-Benz (AS 01 TC 2792), Toyota Innova Crysta (AS 01 EL 1183) and Hyundai i10 (AS 06 T 7286). Police seized the Innova Crysta, while the Mercedes-Benz and Hyundai i10 were reportedly not seized. Two cases have already been registered against Ali at Dibrugarh Sadar Police Station, police said. His wife, Manisha Begum alias Pinky, was also detained in connection with the case.
The arrest followed allegations of a wider cheating operation involving people who were allegedly promised jobs and commercial opportunities in return for money. Police are expected to question Ali to ascertain the extent of the alleged financial transactions, identify other persons who may have been involved and establish whether additional victims were targeted. The investigation is underway, and further legal action will follow based on the findings of the probe.
