Guwahati: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi on Sunday paid heartfelt tribute to late singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg at Lakhidhar Bora Field, Dighalipukhuri, reflecting on the artist’s immense impact on Assamese society and expressing serious concerns about the ongoing investigation into his death.
“This is not a time for celebration. Our beloved artist left us far too early, and the people are still lost in grief. We are seeking the truth about what happened,” Gogoi said. “Even a month after his passing, his influence continues to resonate across Assam. He led fearlessly and stood firm in his ideals, rooted in love for the state. If he were still with us, he would have taught us many things. We must continue to demand justice and truth, not politics.”
Although Zubeen Garg remained largely non-political, Gogoi described him as “one of the most powerful and influential leaders of Assamese society.” He added, “His voice reflected the truth of our society — direct, pure, and deeply connected to his responsibility towards the people. His ethno-nationalist ideals, love for nature, and vision of a better Assam were inspired by legends like Dr. Bhupen Hazarika.”
Addressing the ongoing Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into Garg’s death, Gogoi demanded full transparency and immediate disclosure of details concerning the accused. “There should be no hidden tactics to protect Shyamkanu Mahanta and Siddharth Sharma,” he asserted.
He further alleged that the investigation appeared to be politically influenced, saying, “It seems that CM Himanta Biswa Sarma formed the SIT to protect his relations with the accused. As a result, the investigation is slow and not progressing in the right direction. Many legal experts are now questioning this approach.”
Concluding his remarks, Gogoi called upon the people and authorities to uphold Zubeen Garg’s dream of a ‘Bor Axom’ — a prosperous Assam, a vision that continues to inspire generations alongside that of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika.
