Guwahati: More than 65 inmates at Guwahati Central Jail have reportedly tested positive for HIV, raising concerns over healthcare, screening and the possible prevalence of drug-related risks inside the prison. According to sources cited in reports, a significant number of the affected inmates are facing cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The exact circumstances in which the inmates contracted HIV have not yet been established, and there is no official confirmation linking the infections to any particular mode of transmission.

The reported development has also drawn attention to the need for regular medical screening, counselling, treatment and preventive measures among prison inmates. Earlier this year, jail officials were arrested in connection with an alleged racket involving the supply of drugs and other prohibited substances to inmates.

The Assam State AIDS Control Society’s prison intervention programme has highlighted the presence of high-risk behaviours among inmates and the need for regular awareness, counselling and medical services. The latest reported figures are expected to prompt further medical assessments and closer monitoring of the prison’s healthcare and security mechanisms. Authorities are yet to officially clarify the reported number of HIV-positive inmates.
