Guwahati:: A memorial space dedicated to Assam’s beloved cultural icon Zubeen Garg, named Zubeen Khetra, was formally inaugurated at Rajgarh in Guwahati. The memorial, located beneath the historic old Abhinaya building near the Rajgarh No. 2 Bylane approach road, was inaugurated by Zubeen Garg’s wife, Garima Saikia Garg. The inauguration was marked by the participation of religious leaders and representatives of different faiths, who offered prayers, recited sacred verses and extended blessings according to their respective traditions. The interfaith gathering reflected Zubeen Garg’s secular and humanist philosophy.

The memorial was established through the initiative of journalist, writer and cultural activist Hemanta Sarma. According to Sarma, the objective is to create an inclusive space where people, irrespective of caste, community, language or religion, can remember Zubeen Garg and connect with his music, ideas and philosophy. Garima Saikia Garg said Zubeen had lived in Rajgarh for nearly 15 years and shared a deep emotional connection with the locality. She appreciated the initiative and said the space should belong to everyone.
Sarma clarified that the Rajgarh memorial is not intended to compete with or diminish the significance of Zubeen Garg’s samadhi at Sonapur. He described it as a personal tribute established through his own initiative and financial resources. He also suggested the creation of smaller Zubeen Khetras in homes, villages and neighbourhoods to preserve and spread the singer’s message of humanity and social harmony. The memorial is envisioned as an open sanctuary where Zubeen Garg’s music and humanist legacy can continue to bring people together across social and religious boundaries.
