Dima Hasao: The North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) in Assam has officially been renamed the Dima Hasao Autonomous Council (DHAC), with all departments directed to adopt the new nomenclature in their official work. An order issued by the Office of the Principal Secretary at the Council Secretariat in Haflong directed all departments under the council to use “Dima Hasao Autonomous Council” or “DHAC” in official letters, files, notices, orders, seals and signboards. The directive referred to a notification issued on May 18, 2026, through which the council was renamed from North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council to Dima Hasao Autonomous Council. The latest order has been issued to ensure uniformity in the use of the new name across all council departments and offices.

The autonomous council exercises jurisdiction over the entire Dima Hasao district in central-southern Assam, with its headquarters at Haflong, located around 330 km from Guwahati. The council functions under the Sixth Schedule framework of the Constitution and plays a key role in administering the hill district. The renaming marks the formal adoption of the nomenclature associated with Dima Hasao district for the autonomous council as well. The council authorities have instructed officials and departments to ensure that the new name is reflected consistently in administrative documents, official correspondence and physical signage. The move is expected to bring administrative nomenclature in line with the existing name of the district and ensure consistency across government and council records.
