Udalguri-Sonitpur, Sept 4: Eminent literary figure, social worker and literary pensioner Dhanidhar Medhi of Tangla was conferred the ‘Byakti Mahiyan-2026’ award by the Tangla Kabi Sanmilan on September 2.
The award was presented at Medhi’s residence in recognition of his contributions to Assamese literature, culture, education and social life. Medhi, a dedicated practitioner of the Assamese language and a prominent leader of the Assam Movement, expressed concern over the present state of language and literature after receiving the honour.
He said the language and literary sphere was passing through a critical phase and called for serious discussion and collective efforts to safeguard and promote it.
The programme was conducted by Tangla Kabi Sanmilan convenor Fatik Nandan Rabha. Deeptima Bharali presented a song, while Jayanta Das, Nirupama Deka and Nazrul Islam recited poems.
Tangla Kabi Sanmilan adviser Khagendra Nath Bora, president Ranji Saikia Deka, Tangla Sahitya Sabha vice-president Tapeshwar Rabha and Tangla Press Club secretary Arup Boro highlighted Medhi’s contributions to Assamese literature and society.
Medhi’s wife, retired teacher Gunlata Devi Medhi, was also felicitated at the programme.
Tangla Kabi Sanmilan secretary Jyotiprasad Kalita delivered the vote of thanks and urged people to contribute to the preservation and promotion of the Assamese language and its literary heritage.
