Massive Landslide Partially Blocks Teesta, Chyakoong Rivers in Sikkim

GANGTOK, Sept 6: A massive landslide hit Sikkim’s Mangan district in the early hours of Sunday, partially blocking the flow of the Teesta and Chyakoong rivers, officials said.

A substantial portion of a hillside along a new road cutting on the Naga-Tosa Road in the Naga Forest area collapsed near the confluence of the two rivers, opposite the Theng Tunnel in Chungthang subdivision.

The landslide partially obstructed both rivers, raising concerns over possible changes in water levels. No casualties or injuries were reported, while officials assessed the extent of any property damage.

Water levels at the Sankalang and Phidang outposts remained normal, although the water was muddy. The local administration was directed to continuously monitor the rivers and immediately report any significant changes.
