A gunfight between two armed groups was reported in Lhunjang village along the IT Road in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district early Monday, September 7, followed by the alleged torching of a primary school in the area.
Police said the exchange of fire began around 5 am in Lhunjang village under Chalwa Police Station, about 12 km from the police station, and continued for nearly 30 minutes.
According to police, armed miscreants approached the village with an apparent intention to attack, prompting security personnel stationed there to retaliate. The village has around 40 residents and also houses posts of the Manipur Rifles and displaced personnel of the India Reserve Battalion.
No injuries were reported in the exchange of fire, police said.
Following the gunfight, the armed miscreants allegedly set fire to Lhunjang Primary School before retreating. The school building was completely gutted in the blaze.
Police have not established the identity or affiliation of those responsible for the arson. An investigation was underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The incident raised concerns over the continuing impact of violence in Kangpokpi on educational infrastructure and civilian life in areas affected by the prolonged conflict.
