NEW DELHI, Sept 9: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday questioned the Centre and Delhi Police over the alleged killing of a 54-year-old Manipuri musician in Delhi, raising concerns over the safety of people from the Northeast.
Chongtham Vikram Singh was allegedly beaten to death by a group of delivery workers and dhaba staff after he objected to them creating a disturbance outside his residence in Kilokari early Monday, police said.
Seven men have been arrested and a minor detained in connection with the incident. Singh’s son, Yaiphaba, took him to Holy Family Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
In a post on X, Gandhi said Singh had gone downstairs to ask the men to lower the noise outside his home and was beaten to death. He questioned what the Union Home Ministry and Delhi Police were doing to address what he described as “growing lawlessness”, particularly against people from the Northeast.
Gandhi also said the incident had raised concerns among Northeast families living in Delhi and demanded a swift and thorough investigation.
Later, Gandhi spoke to Singh’s brother and conveyed his condolences to the family, Congress media and publicity department head Pawan Khera said. He assured the family that their demand for justice would not go unheard, Khera said.
A case was registered at Sunlight Colony Police Station. The North East Students Society, Delhi University, also condemned the incident and described Singh as a respected Manipuri musician.
