IMPHAL, Sept 9: Renowned Manipuri singer Sadananda Hamom has demanded capital punishment for those responsible for the alleged killing of musician Chongtham Vikram Singh in Delhi.
Hamom joined the tribute ceremony at Imphal International Airport on Wednesday, where family members, friends and well-wishers gathered to receive Singh’s mortal remains.
Describing Singh as a “very loveable and down-to-earth person”, Hamom expressed deep grief over his death following the alleged assault.
The singer said the incident had once again raised concerns over racial discrimination faced by people from the Northeast in Delhi. He questioned whether such discrimination had become common and expressed concern over what people from the region could face elsewhere in the country.
Hamom called for greater awareness about the Northeast, its geography, people and diverse cultures, stressing that the region was an integral part of India.
He urged the authorities to take stringent action against those responsible for Singh’s death and called for an end to racial discrimination against people from the Northeast.
“Authorities concerned should take stringent action against the culprits, including capital punishment,” Hamom said.
