NAGAON, September 10: Five police personnel, including the officer-in-charge of Khatowal Police Station, were injured after a group of people allegedly attacked a police team during an operation to locate a man wanted in connection with a police complaint in Assam’s Nagaon district, officials said.
The incident occurred at Geruaati when the team, acting on directions from the Nagaon Senior Superintendent of Police’s office, went to the residence of Rashidul Haque after he allegedly failed to respond to repeated summons to appear at the police station.
According to police, a tense situation developed during the operation, following which Haque’s family members allegedly attacked the personnel and damaged the police vehicle. Haque and several others allegedly involved in the incident fled the spot amid the commotion.
Khatowal Police Station Officer-in-Charge Bishnu Deuri, Head Constable Azgar Ali, Naik Aridul Islam, Lance Naik Jahangir Ahmed and police vehicle driver Sahil Ahmed sustained injuries in the alleged attack.
Police subsequently detained several people in connection with the incident, including Haque’s mother, Hazara Khatun, and two others identified as Imam Hussain and Mahidul Islam.
Haque had allegedly been summoned several times in connection with a complaint but failed to appear before the police, according to reports.
Police were investigating the alleged assault on the team and damage to the official vehicle. Haque had also previously faced allegations of involvement in cattle smuggling.
