Duliajan, Sept 12: Duliajan Girls’ College observed the birth anniversary of its founder-principal, late Nitya Dutta, with the second annual Nitya Dutta Memorial Lecture on Friday, bringing together music, creativity and reflections on his contribution to the institution.
Popular singer and musician Tarali Sharma attended the programme as the invited speaker and delivered the memorial lecture on “Music for Creativity, Creativity in Music”. Speaking for nearly an hour, Sharma explored the ways music shapes human creativity and accompanies everyday experiences.
Drawing an analogy with cinema, Sharma said that just as films move forward with songs, dance and background scores, human life also has its own “soundtrack” running beneath moments of happiness, sorrow and uncertainty. She added that even silence could sometimes become a soundtrack.
“We are surrounded by music from morning till night, yet we often fail to realise that we are living within it,” Sharma said, describing the rhythmic beating of the human heart as perhaps the finest music of all.
The programme began with ceremonial lamp lighting by college principal Dr Utpal Sut, followed by a floral tribute and lamp-lighting ceremony before Dutta’s portrait. Members of the late founder-principal’s family also attended the event.
In his welcome address, Dr Sut recalled Dutta’s contribution to the establishment and growth of the institution and traced the college’s journey from its inception.
Anchored by Mridujyoti Kalita, Assistant Professor in the Department of Assamese, the programme featured a Borgeet by former student Aastha Hazarika and a Sattriya dance presentation by Divya Sharma. A group of 15 students led by Karabi Borgohain performed Dihanam, creating a spiritual atmosphere during the month of Bhado.
Bhupen Saikia, Dr Minakshi Dutta Barman, Suresh Bora and Rajurani Saikia also shared their reflections. Satyendra Kumar Dutta, eldest son of Nitya Dutta, thanked the college for organising the memorial lecture and remembering its founder on his birth anniversary.
College vice-principal Dr Yashashya Bora delivered the vote of thanks, and the programme concluded with the national anthem.
