GUWAHATI, Sept 16: Assam Education Minister Ranoj Pegu said students who failed examinations or failed to maintain the required attendance could lose eligibility for completely free admission in the following academic year.
Pegu said students who failed an examination would have to pay 50 per cent of the prescribed admission fee when seeking admission in the subsequent academic year. He said the free admission scheme had encouraged many students to enrol in educational institutions, but some did not attend classes regularly.
The minister stressed that students were required to maintain at least 70 per cent attendance. Those failing to meet the requirement would not be eligible for the free admission benefit in the following academic year.
Pegu also stressed the importance of birth registration, particularly in tribal areas where home deliveries were still reported. He said every child must obtain a birth certificate within 21 days of birth.
