Dhakuakhana, Sept 21: A citizens’ forum named ‘Nagorik Mancha’ was formed in Dhakuakhana to preserve the area’s heritage, traditions and communal harmony and promote social stability. The office bearers announced the formation at a press conference on Sunday.
A public meeting held at the Dhakuakhana Government High School auditorium on September 20 was attended by more than 250 residents. The meeting, chaired by retired Dhakuakhana College vice-principal Purnananda Gogoi, unanimously resolved to form an executive committee.
Purnananda Gogoi was appointed president, while Jogesh Baruah and Dr Amal Chandra Dutta were named working presidents. Arun Chamuah and Purna Chutia were appointed general secretary and treasurer, respectively. The committee will soon be expanded into a 51-member body with representation from different communities and tribes, the forum said.
The forum will focus on steering youths away from drugs and criminal activities, organising career counselling workshops and facilitating interactions with successful personalities. It will also conduct awareness campaigns against superstition, blind faith and anti-social activities.
The forum said it would monitor the movement of suspicious strangers in the area and alert the administration when necessary. It also highlighted plans to establish a library to strengthen the local educational environment.
Addressing the media, forum members said the Nagorik Mancha would work to address negative elements that had recently emerged in the region and remain prepared to tackle social challenges in the future.
