GUWAHATI: Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) has performed robotic-assisted cardiac procedures, including coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and mitral valve surgery, for the first time in the Northeast.
The milestone marked a significant development in Assam’s public healthcare system and expanded the availability of advanced cardiac care in the region. Robotic-assisted surgery uses three-dimensional visualisation and robotic precision to enable surgeons to perform complex procedures through smaller incisions.
The approach can reduce postoperative pain and support faster recovery for patients.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulated the GMCH team in a post on X, describing the achievement as a proud moment for the state’s public healthcare sector.
Sarma highlighted the government’s efforts to modernise GMCH’s infrastructure and strengthen tertiary cardiac care, with the aim of developing the institution into a world-class medical facility.
He said the initiative was part of a broader effort to expand advanced medical services in Assam. The next major objective was to work towards establishing a comprehensive cardiac transplant programme.
The introduction of robotic-assisted cardiac procedures was expected to strengthen GMCH’s capacity to provide specialised treatment and expand access to advanced surgical facilities for patients from Assam and other northeastern states.
