Meghalaya is gearing up for the 50th Golden Jubilee celebration of the Wangala Festival at Chibragre, with the venue witnessing round-the-clock preparations by workers and members of the Wangala Committee.
A major highlight of this year’s celebration is expected to be a special performance featuring 1,000 drums, compared with the festival’s traditional use of 100 drums. The event will showcase the music, dance and cultural traditions of the Garo community.
Wangala, the Garo community’s harvest festival, is traditionally observed as a thanksgiving for a successful harvest and serves as an occasion to preserve and promote its cultural heritage.
Wangala Committee Chairman Ronald Rikman said the organising committee was working continuously despite the limited time available.
“There are many challenges before us, but the time is very limited. Every member of the committee is working with dedication and responsibility because this is not just another festival—it is the 50th Golden Jubilee of Wangala,” Rikman said.
The organisers expect visitors from across India and abroad and are making arrangements to give them an opportunity to experience traditional Garo music, dance and other cultural performances.
“This is a historic occasion for all of us. We are working together with one goal—to make the 50th Golden Jubilee Wangala Festival a memorable celebration. We pray to the Almighty to guide us, support us and bless our efforts,” Rikman said.
Preparations at Chibragre are continuing as organisers work towards the Golden Jubilee celebrations centred on the cultural heritage and traditions of the Garo community.
