The National Investigation Agency (NIA) detained Mustafizur Rahman at his residence in Azad Nagar, Barpeta Road, on Tuesday and conducted a search as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged jihadi activities, according to sources.
An NIA team searched Rahman’s residence and seized his mobile phone during the operation, sources said.
The action came about two months after Rahman was released on bail from Guwahati Central Jail, where he had been lodged following his arrest by the Assam Police Special Task Force (STF).
The STF had arrested Rahman from Azad Nagar on March 14 over alleged links to jihadi activities. At the time, investigators had reportedly seized electronic devices and other materials during searches connected with the case.
Rahman remained in custody for an extended period before securing bail around two months ago. The latest NIA action has brought him under renewed scrutiny as the agency examines the alleged activities.
The specific allegations being investigated in the latest operation were not immediately available.
According to Rahman’s family, he runs a clothes shop opposite the Barpeta Road Jama Masjid. His detention and the search at his residence drew attention in the Azad Nagar locality.
The investigation remains underway, with further details on the NIA operation and the allegations against Rahman awaited.
