BJP candidate Debashish Sharma has filed an FIR against AIUDF chief and Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll candidate Badruddin Ajmal, alleging that Ajmal made false and defamatory remarks against him during an election meeting. The complaint was filed at Nagaon Sadar Police Station on Saturday, three days before polling for the October 6 by-election.
Sharma alleged that Ajmal had accused him of being responsible for the death of Mumtaz Begum and referred to him as a “murderer”. He rejected the allegations and said such remarks could affect his reputation among voters.
Speaking after filing the FIR, Sharma also questioned Ajmal’s campaign promises on improving schools and healthcare facilities, asking how the proposed measures would be funded. He said he would pursue legal action over what he described as violations of the law.
The BJP candidate further criticised Ajmal’s political record and his campaign statements, while referring to Assam’s cultural identity and the importance of connecting with voters.
Sharma also urged political parties and candidates to avoid what he described as false allegations against opponents during the campaign, maintaining that the remarks attributed to Ajmal were serious.
The Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll is scheduled for October 6, with counting on October 9. The contest includes BJP’s Debashish Sharma, AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal and Congress candidate Sibamoni Bora, among others.
