A Meghalaya court has sentenced a man to rigorous imprisonment for the remainder of his natural life without parole for the 2021 murder of a 79-year-old woman and her 25-year-old housemaid in West Khasi Hills.
The District and Sessions Judge, West Khasi Hills, Nongstoin, delivered the verdict on September 30 and imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh for each victim.
The case dates back to August 24, 2021, when the elderly woman’s son found their Nongstoin Village residence locked from outside. After breaking open the lock at around 10.20 am, he found his mother dead in the dish-washing room. The body of the housemaid was later recovered from a bedroom.
Nongstoin police registered a case under Sections 302 and 34 of the IPC and launched an investigation. The accused, Banphrangkupar Nongbri, was subsequently identified and a charge sheet was filed against him under Section 302 of the IPC.
After considering the evidence, the court convicted Nongbri in the twin murder case and awarded him rigorous imprisonment for the rest of his natural life without parole.
