Three arrested, 318 codeine cough syrup bottles seized in Imphal East

Three people were arrested and 318 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup were seized during a joint anti-narcotics operation in Manipur’s Imphal East district on October 4, police said.

The operation was conducted in the Ningthem Pukhri Mapal area following intelligence inputs. Security personnel first arrested John Longjam alias Mani, 41, son of late L. Herojit Meitei of Sagolband Tera Khuraijam Leirak.

Police recovered 158 bottles of CHOCO+ Coup syrup from Longjam. The bottles contained 10 mg of Codeine Phosphate each, police said.

During questioning, Longjam allegedly provided information about another suspected person, leading the team to the residence of 41-year-old Longjam Wanglen, son of late L. Noren of Naoremthong Khulem Leikai. He was subsequently taken into custody.

Information allegedly provided by Wanglen led the joint team to another suspect, 29-year-old Ningthoujam Henching, son of N. Chaoba of Singjamei Oinam Thingel.

Police said 160 bottles of CHOCO+ Coup syrup, each containing 10 mg of Codeine Phosphate, were recovered from Henching.

The operation also resulted in the seizure of a Mahindra XUV and a TVS Jupiter scooter. The three arrested persons and the seized items were handed over to Porompat Police Station for further legal action, police said.
