Left Parties Protest in Guwahati Seeking Rs 25 Lakh Flood Compensation

The CPI(M) and several other Left parties staged a demonstration at Volvo Point in Ulubari on Wednesday, demanding enhanced compensation for victims of the floods in Upper Assam and immediate financial assistance for affected families.

Hundreds of party workers and supporters joined the protest, calling for adequate relief for families who suffered losses to their homes, property and livelihoods during the floods.

The protesters demanded Rs 25 lakh for the families of people who died in the floods in Upper Assam. They also sought immediate financial assistance for families affected by the disaster.

The Left parties further demanded that Assam’s recurring flood problem be declared a national issue, citing its impact on lives, property and livelihoods across the state.

The demonstration also included a political demand for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Tension arose at the protest site when demonstrators and police personnel confronted each other. Several protesters were detained as police attempted to control the situation.

Visuals from the demonstration showed a scuffle between protesters and police personnel at the Ulubari site.

The detained protesters were later taken to the dharna venue at Chachal, where they were expected to continue their demonstration and press for their demands.
