Gohpur in Assam is set to host a free book fair where one lakh books will be distributed among visitors, with the event named in memory of late singer and cultural figure Zubeen Garg.
The ‘Zubeen Garg Free Book Fair’, organised by Jonohitaishi Library, will be held at the Lambodar Bora Rangmanch and Library at Brahmajan Thali Pukhuri. It is scheduled to be inaugurated by Garima Garg, Zubeen Garg’s sister, on December 6 or 7.
The initiative aims to expand access to books and encourage sustained reading habits, particularly among young people. Jonohitaishi Library began its free book distribution programme in 2025 under the initiative of Jibon Saikia of Lakhimpur and adviser Bubul Hazarika.
Under the programme, books are provided to readers free of cost, with organisers seeking to make reading material more accessible to younger generations.
The upcoming fair has been named after Zubeen Garg in recognition of his contribution to Assamese music and culture, which continues to be commemorated through public initiatives across the state.
The organising committee said the distribution of one lakh books was intended to encourage reading and provide people with access to books covering a range of subjects and genres.
