Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has sought Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw’s intervention into the death of Himashri Boro, an Assam woman whose body was found beside a railway track in Andhra Pradesh after she went missing while travelling to Guwahati.
In a post on X, Gogoi said Boro was travelling alone on the Vivek Express (22503) from Visakhapatnam to Guwahati when she went missing on October 6. Her body was recovered near the railway track the following day.
Referring to accounts from the family and media reports, the Congress MP said Boro had reportedly felt unsafe because of the men in her compartment and had faced harassment, including obscene gestures.
Gogoi said police suspected that she might have fallen from the moving train, while her family had raised concerns about possible foul play. The circumstances surrounding her death remain under investigation.
Calling for the Railway Minister’s intervention, Gogoi said the incident raised serious concerns about the safety of women travelling by train.
He also referred to National Crime Records Bureau data showing that the Government Railway Police registered 488 offences against women and children and 1,422 offences against the human body across the country in 2024.
Boro’s post-mortem examination has been completed, according to the latest reports, and her body is expected to be brought to Assam on Friday.
