Debashish Sharma leads in first round of Nagaon bypoll counting

BJP candidate Debashish Sharma took an early lead in the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll after the first round of counting on Friday, while AIUDF nominee Badruddin Ajmal topped the postal ballot tally.

Sharma secured 4,761 votes in the first round, ahead of Congress candidate Sibamoni Bora, who received 1,385 votes. Ajmal polled 902 votes, while independent candidate Inamul Huda received five votes. Yunus Tamuli secured 16 votes, according to the figures available.

In the postal ballot count, Ajmal was ahead with 126 votes, followed by the BJP and Congress candidates.

Counting began at 8 am under tight security, with postal ballots taken up first before votes recorded in electronic voting machines (EVMs) were counted.

The exercise is being conducted at Dawson Higher Secondary School and Government Boys’ School in Nagaon district, with 14 counting tables at each centre.

The bypoll has turned into a contest among BJP candidate Sharma, Congress nominee Bora and AIUDF candidate and former MP Ajmal.
