Sikkim CM Releases Chocolate Mahseer into Rangeet River at Chirbirey River Fest

GANGTOK, Oct 12: Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang released Chocolate Mahseer fish into the Rangeet river on Sunday during the Chirbirey River Fest near Jorethang, highlighting the importance of conserving indigenous fish species and protecting aquatic biodiversity.

Tamang took part in the fish release programme on the second day of the festival, accompanied by ministers, MLAs and officials at a fish ranching site along the riverbank. The initiative aimed to promote freshwater conservation and protect river ecosystems.

In a social media post, the chief minister said the festival celebrated Sikkim’s natural beauty, adventurous spirit and cultural identity by bringing communities together through local traditions, tourism and river-based activities.

He also highlighted the potential of the state’s freshwater resources to support fisheries and aquaculture, saying suitable hybrid fish varieties could contribute to local livelihoods, food security and sustainable fish farming.

“The introduction and development of hybrid fish varieties, particularly hybrid mahseer and other improved fish strains where suitable, can contribute to local livelihoods, food security, and sustainable fish farming,” he said.

Tamang added that the festival sought to promote lesser-known tourist destinations, support local communities and encourage responsible tourism while highlighting the conservation of the state’s natural resources.
