Tripura Police arrest man, seize pistol and 14 rounds near Bangladesh border

Tripura Police arrested a man and seized a factory-made pistol, 14 live rounds of ammunition and other firearm-related items during a late-night operation at Bhagalpur village in West Tripura, near the international border, on October 14.

The arrested person, identified as Santosh Biswas, works as a daily wage labourer, police said.

N. Gopal Deb, Officer-in-Charge of Airport Police Station, said police acted on a tip-off that Biswas had allegedly stored contraband items at his residence. A police team cordoned off the house in the presence of witnesses before conducting a search.

“Although we did not find the suspected contraband items, we recovered a factory-made pistol, 14 live rounds of ammunition, a pistol pouch, one magazine and oil used for cleaning the firearm, along with other items,” Deb said.

Police seized the recovered items and arrested Biswas. A case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Arms Act, and a forensic team was called to examine the seized materials.

Deb said no previous criminal record involving Biswas had been registered at Airport Police Station.

Police are investigating the source of the weapon and ammunition and whether Biswas had links to other illegal activities.
