DHAKUAKHANA, Oct 18: Upholding a tradition rooted in agrarian culture and spiritual practices, residents of Baligaon in Dhakuakhana organised a procession to welcome Kati Bihu on Sunday.
Elders, women and local farmers gathered at the Baligaon Namghar in Dhakuakhana town for the event, titled “Swagatam Kati Bihu”, organised by the greater Baligaon community ahead of the lighting of akashbanti (sky lamps) and earthen lamps beneath tulsi plants.
Hosted by social worker and theatre activist Nanda Chutia, the programme featured an address by social worker Chandrakamal Bora, who spoke about the significance of Kati Bihu. He said the festival was not an occasion for revelry but a solemn observance centred on nature conservation and prayers for the well-being of the farming community.
Naren Baruah, the village’s senior namghoria, formally inaugurated the procession. Dressed in traditional white attire, participants chanted Hari Nam and filled the surroundings with devotional sounds, creating a spiritual atmosphere.
Through the procession, Baligaon residents continued a tradition they have maintained for several years and extended Kati Bihu greetings to the people of Assam.
