AGARTALA, Oct 21: The Youth Tipra Federation (YTF) has lodged a police complaint against Instagram user Amir Shokeen over an allegedly offensive video targeting an indigenous youth from Tripura, seeking legal action for alleged racial harassment and cyberbullying.
In its complaint filed on October 21 with the Officer-in-Charge of New Capital Complex Police Station in Agartala, the organisation alleged that a video uploaded on September 19 showed Shokeen verbally abusing the youth in Delhi, repeatedly calling him “Chinese” and using a derogatory term for Tripura while recording the interaction for social media.
The federation alleged that the video insulted not only the individual but also the indigenous community, the state and people from the wider Northeast. It warned that such content could reinforce regional prejudice and hostility towards Northeastern residents in metropolitan cities.
Describing racial abuse disguised as humour or social media content as unacceptable, YTF urged police to register an FIR under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act, 2000. It also sought coordination with cybercrime authorities and Delhi Police to investigate the incident and initiate legal proceedings.
The complaint was signed by YTF president Suraj Debbarma, general secretary James Debbarma, Khowai district president Prasmit Debbarma, Gomati district president Sujoy Uchoi and other office-bearers.
The federation called for prompt action to protect the dignity and rights of indigenous people and citizens from the Northeast.
