NEW DELHI, Oct 22: Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Wednesday condemned the alleged racial abuse of a youth from Tripura by social media content creator Amir Shokeen, warning that Delhi and Tripura Police would take action against the accused.
In a post on X, Rijiju said there had been a delay in filing an official complaint but asserted that the accused would face consequences. He also criticised those who tolerate such behaviour, saying they contributed to the spread of hatred in society.
The controversy erupted after a video allegedly showing Shokeen making derogatory remarks against a youth from Tripura went viral, triggering widespread outrage across the Northeast. Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha subsequently directed the state Director General of Police to coordinate with Delhi Police over the matter.
A complaint was also lodged with Tripura Police, accusing Shokeen of racial harassment, cyberbullying and derogatory remarks against indigenous communities.
Amid the backlash, Shokeen issued a video apology on Facebook, claiming the exchange was scripted as humour and that the youth featured in the video was known to him. He denied intending to insult the individual or any community and apologised to the people of Tripura for any offence caused.
The incident has drawn condemnation from political leaders across party lines, with calls for accountability over the alleged remarks.
