Dhekiajuli, Oct 25: The Dhekiajuli Regional Branch of Aranyam Seuj Society has formed a dedicated committee to promote the welfare of indigenous dogs and other animals, strengthen rabies control and raise public awareness about responsible animal care.
The decision was taken at a special general meeting held at Riya Kakshya in Dhekiajuli on October 24, following directives from the society’s central committee.
The meeting was chaired by Dr Umesh Chandra Das, regional adviser and retired Sub-Divisional Veterinary Officer, while Dolly Das, regional branch coordinator, explained the objectives of the initiative.
The organisers highlighted the importance of biodiversity conservation, noting that several native species, including sparrows, white-breasted waterhens and Asiatic water snakes, face the threat of extinction. They stressed that indigenous dogs were also an important part of Assam’s local animal wealth and that their compassionate care, responsible management and scientific treatment were essential to conservation efforts.
The meeting emphasised the need to foster a harmonious environment for humans, domestic animals and wildlife to protect Assam’s biodiversity. Discussions covered projects for the welfare and protection of local dogs, cats and other indigenous animal species, along with rabies prevention and public awareness.
The meeting was conducted by Sailab Bhattacharjya, youth coordinator of the regional branch. Following discussions, the society constituted a committee to plan and implement animal welfare and conservation initiatives.
Dr Umesh Chandra Das was named president, while retired teacher and animal lover Biren Saikia was appointed executive president. Girish Chandra Das, founder of Dhekiajuli’s Gach Bihu initiative, and Jurit Jyoti Bora were named vice-presidents.
Dr Dalima Kakati was appointed secretary, while Dolly Das will serve as treasurer. Medical worker Gayatri Devi Bhattacharjya was named coordinator. Manmayuri Das, Sailob Bhattacharjya, Rubi Devi and Bablu Ansari were also assigned responsibilities within the committee.
The committee plans to organise animal rescue operations, rabies control initiatives, educational workshops, internship programmes, public awareness campaigns and research into the role of indigenous animals in the ecosystem.
Through these initiatives, Aranyam Seuj Society aims to encourage responsible animal care, strengthen community participation in animal welfare and promote a scientific and compassionate approach to protecting indigenous dogs and other animals in Assam.
