Bihu Artists’ Assault in Sribhumi Sparks Protest in Dhekiajuli

Udalguri-Sonitpur, Oct 26: The Dhekiajuli Regional Committee of Bihu Shilpi Sanstha has condemned the reported assault on Bihu performers in Sribhumi district and demanded the swift arrest of those responsible.

The committee organised a protest programme in Dhekiajuli, during which participants called for adequate security for Bihu artists and stringent legal action against the accused. They also demanded capital punishment for those involved.

The committee stressed that Bihu represents Assamese identity, pride, tradition and cultural heritage, and said protecting the safety, dignity and honour of Bihu performers was a collective responsibility of society and the administration.

It demanded an impartial investigation and exemplary punishment for those found guilty under the law. The committee also urged the authorities to introduce effective security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Expressing resentment over reports that the accused had been released on bail shortly after their arrest, the committee called for a thorough and impartial investigation into both the alleged assault on the performers and the reported destruction of a traditional Bihu drum, or dhol.

The committee reiterated its demand for appropriate legal action and exemplary punishment for those found guilty.
