Assam will impose a Green Cess on the transfer of ownership of older vehicles, with the revenue earmarked for the state’s greening initiatives, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on X.
The measure aims to discourage the use of older, more polluting vehicles and encourage people to switch to newer, less polluting alternatives, according to the chief minister.
The proposed levy forms part of the state government’s efforts to promote environmental sustainability and support greening initiatives.
However, two-wheelers, three-wheelers, electric vehicles (EVs) and compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered vehicles will be exempt from the cess.
The announcement did not specify the applicable rates, the age threshold for vehicles covered by the measure or the date on which the levy will come into effect.
