Sikkim CM Calls for Better Connectivity and Cultural Preservation to Boost Northeast Tourism

TAWANG, Oct 30: Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has called for stronger regional cooperation, improved transport links and greater emphasis on cultural preservation to strengthen the tourism sector across the eight Northeastern states.

Speaking at the inaugural session of the 14th International Tourism Mart (ITM) 2026 in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh, on Thursday, Tamang said coordinated efforts were essential to establish the Northeast as a prominent tourism destination.

He said the region needed better transport networks and tourism infrastructure, alongside efforts to showcase its diverse cultural heritage and involve local communities in tourism development.

Sharing Sikkim’s experience, Tamang highlighted his government’s initiatives to expand homestay facilities, bring lesser-known destinations into the tourism map and improve infrastructure to support the sector’s growth.

He also underlined the role of responsible tourism in creating jobs and sustainable livelihood opportunities, particularly for young people and communities living in tourism-dependent areas.

Crediting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership with bringing greater focus to connectivity, tourism and inclusive development in the Northeast, Tamang said the ‘Ashta Lakshmi’ vision could help the region emerge as a leading destination for international travellers.
