The CPI(M)-led Left Front has settled on 26 wards for the upcoming Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) elections, with a possible understanding with the Congress expected to determine the opposition’s final seat-sharing arrangement, Tripura Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury said on November 2.
Chaudhury, who also serves as CPI(M) State Committee secretary, said negotiations were under way for the other 25 wards. The parties planned to resume discussions once Congress leaders returned from Delhi, after which they would decide how to distribute the remaining seats and select candidates.
The announcement came as Chaudhury accompanied Left Front nominees to submit their nomination papers. He indicated that the Left Front might field candidates in a few more wards, while the Congress was likely to contest most of the other seats.
Beyond seat-sharing, Chaudhury outlined the issues the opposition alliance intended to raise during the civic campaign. He said it would seek to restore democratic practices, curb corruption and improve municipal services.
Questioning the ruling party’s development claims, he argued that progress should be judged by whether residents received better public services and experienced improvements in their daily lives, rather than by the assets held by political leaders.
He also said opposition parties were considering coordinated contests in other municipal bodies, signalling that discussions on electoral cooperation could extend beyond Agartala.
