The Capital Police has launched a free and voluntary verification drive for tenants, employees and domestic workers in Itanagar to strengthen public safety and help prevent theft and fraud.
Named Project Sahtam, the initiative was launched by Capital Itanagar Superintendent of Police Jummar Basar on November 3. Sahtam, meaning protection or shield in the Nyishi language, will initially cover Sectors 1 to 4 under Itanagar Police Station from November 5 to 18. The remaining three sectors will be covered in subsequent phases.
Under the initiative, police will verify the identities and addresses of tenants, employees and domestic workers, examine available authorised police records and conduct physical verification of local addresses. Police stations linked to applicants’ permanent or previous addresses may also be contacted.
The initiative follows complaints from residents about domestic workers and employees allegedly leaving without notice, sometimes after taking money or valuables. Police said the lack of verified identity and address details often makes it difficult to trace such individuals.
Basar urged landlords, employers and households to participate, describing the initiative as a simple and voluntary facility to improve security.
Separate application forms for tenants, employees and domestic workers can be downloaded through a link on the Capital Police’s official Facebook page or collected from Itanagar Police Station. Applicants must submit two copies of the completed form, a recent photograph and the required documents. Original documents must be produced for verification and will be returned immediately.
Each application will receive a reference number, and verification reports will generally be issued within a week through WhatsApp or in person at the police station. Cases requiring responses from other police stations may take longer.
Police clarified that participation requires the informed consent of the person being verified and no fee will be charged. The collected information will remain in authorised police custody for verification and lawful policing purposes.
The report will confirm the person’s identity, address and police records checked, but will not serve as a character certificate or guarantee of future conduct.
During the pilot phase, SI Tatung Tari, SI Kipa Robin, SI Tana Suraj and SI Padam Padi will oversee verification in Sectors 1, 2, 3 and 4, respectively.
Capital Police has appealed to residents in the covered sectors to use the facility during the pilot period.
