The Rouse Avenue Court in Delhi on Thursday disposed of the anticipatory bail application filed by Manipur MP and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam in a sexual harassment case after Delhi Police assured it that there were no immediate plans to arrest him.
Delhi Police told the court that if his arrest became necessary during the investigation, Akoijam would be served a seven-day prior notice. The submission was made by Additional Public Prosecutor Manish Rawat and investigating officer Kavita Rao.
After considering the police’s submission and the documents presented, Special Judge Dig Vinay Singh disposed of the plea. The court also directed Akoijam to provide the names of two persons known to him and stated that a physical notice would be served on him.
The court further allowed the investigating officer to approach it if the MP failed to cooperate with the investigation.
The case stems from sexual harassment allegations made by 11 women students against Akoijam. An FIR was registered at Vasant Kunj North Police Station in Delhi, and the matter remains under investigation.
Akoijam had earlier secured interim protection from arrest from courts in Manipur and Delhi. His anticipatory bail plea was subsequently placed before the Rouse Avenue Court following a jurisdictional issue related to his position as a sitting Member of Parliament.
The court had extended his interim protection on November 2 before hearing the matter on Thursday.
