Assam CM Backs Nationwide Electoral Roll Revision, Slams Priyank Kharge for Remarks on State’s Youth

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said the state government would welcome the Election Commission of India’s decision if it announces a nationwide Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The Election Commission is scheduled to hold a press conference at 4:15 PM today, where the revision is expected to be formally announced.

“We are aware that the Election Commission of India is holding a press conference today. If the SIR is announced nationwide, we will welcome it,” Sarma told reporters, signalling the state’s support for measures aimed at ensuring accuracy in voter registration.

According to official sources, the press briefing is likely to be led by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. While the media advisory did not detail the agenda, reports have indicated that the focus will be on initiating the special revision exercise across multiple states.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister sharply criticised Congress leader Priyank Kharge for his alleged remarks questioning the educational qualifications and competence of Assam’s youth. Sarma described Kharge as a “first-class idiot,” accusing him of insulting the people of the state.

“Priyank Kharge has insulted Assamese youth, and Congress has not yet condemned this. Perhaps we might file a case against him because he has said that Assam does not have educated youth. It is an insult to the entire Assamese youth,” Sarma said.

The remarks come amid growing political discourse around skill development and employment opportunities in Assam. Sarma’s statement underscores the state government’s stance that the people of Assam are capable and competitive, and that any suggestion to the contrary will not be taken lightly.
