Guwahati: Veteran artiste Syed Sadulla, a towering figure in Assamese music and culture, passed away on Thursday morning at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). He was 77.
The celebrated singer, lyricist, composer, and former radio announcer had been battling a serious blood-related disorder and was admitted to GMCH on Tuesday. Despite doctors’ best efforts, he passed away at 10:30 a.m.
Born on February 1, 1948, in Dibrugarh district, Sadulla was known for his rich baritone voice and artistic versatility. He made history as All India Radio Dibrugarh’s first English news reader and later became a familiar voice on countless radio and television programmes. He was also a key member of the iconic band The Quivers, which shaped the golden era of Assamese contemporary music.
GMCH sources confirmed that Sadulla had been diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukaemia (CLL), accompanied by severe respiratory complications.

In recognition of his lifelong contribution, the Sadin-Pratidin Group recently honoured him with the Achiever Music Award.
His death marks the end of an era in Assamese music, but his timeless voice and compositions will continue to inspire generations to come.
