Guwahati: In a heartfelt tribute to the legendary Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika on his 14th death anniversary, the Assam Government has taken a significant step toward immortalising one of his most iconic creations, “Manuhe Manuhor Babe.” Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma announced in Jalukbari that the state has formally decided to request the United Nations to recognise the timeless song as a “Humanity Song” or a humanitarian anthem.
Dr Sarma said that the government has already initiated the process to urge the UN to honour the song, which encapsulates the universal message of compassion, equality, and brotherhood that Dr Hazarika championed throughout his life.
‘We have decided to urge the UN to recognise “Manuhe Manuhor Babe” song as humanity song,’ the CM said. The Chief Minister emphasised that the decision reflects Assam’s collective pride in Dr Hazarika’s artistic legacy and his enduring relevance as a voice for humanity.
Marking the occasion, the Assam Government organised commemorative events across all 35 districts and 27 sub-divisions of the state. As part of the observance, nearly 5,000 students, youth, and citizens in each district joined in performing “Manuhe Manuhor Babe.” In total, over two lakh people across Assam came together to sing the song in unison, forming a symbolic human chain of unity and harmony.
Highlighting the state’s year-long celebration of Dr Bhupen Hazarika’s birth centenary, Dr Sarma recalled that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had graced the inaugural ceremony and that the closing event will be held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. He also announced that the government will construct a monumental statue of Dr Hazarika—over 100 feet tall—at the zero point of the Bhupen Hazarika Setu (Dhola-Sadiya Bridge).
In addition, the Chief Minister declared that one road in every district will be dedicated to the music maestro’s memory. On December 10, the government will inaugurate Swahid Smark, while Swahid Pronamu Tumak will be performed across the state to honour the sacrifices of Assam’s martyrs.
Through these initiatives, the government aims to ensure that Dr Bhupen Hazarika’s message of humanity, unity, and cultural pride continues to inspire generations—both in Assam and across the world.
