Guwahati: Assam’s Chief Information Commissioner (CIC) Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta has resigned from his position following a series of Right to Information (RTI) petitions filed against his brother, entrepreneur and cultural organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta.
Sources revealed that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had advised Mahanta to step down in view of the RTI applications seeking information related to his brother’s activities. Acting on the Chief Minister’s advice, Mahanta formally tendered his resignation from the post.
A former Director General of Police (DGP) of Assam, Bhaskarjyoti Mahanta took charge as the State Chief Information Commissioner earlier this year. An Assam-Meghalaya cadre IPS officer from the 1988 batch, he had also served as Director General of Border and earned recognition for his exemplary service and dedication to the state police force.
His resignation comes amid heightened scrutiny over transparency and accountability in public institutions following a series of RTI disclosures. The state government has yet to announce a successor to the post.
