Guwahati: The Assam Cabinet has approved a financial grant of ₹25 lakh for cricketer Uma Chetry in recognition of her remarkable performance at the Women’s World Cup 2025, where Team India emerged as champions.
The decision, announced after a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma at Lok Sewa Bhawan, highlighted the state government’s commitment to supporting sporting excellence. The meeting also approved key decisions across judicial, educational, and social welfare sectors.
The announcement came a day after a grand felicitation ceremony was held in Bokakhat on November 8, where Chetry received a hero’s welcome from thousands of supporters. A colourful rally, complete with traditional dhol and madol drums, escorted her through the town before she reached the District Sports Association ground amid a shower of flower petals.
The event, organised jointly by the Bokakhat District Sports Association, Golaghat District Administration, District Police Administration, and Bokakhat Sub-Divisional Administration, drew widespread participation. Assam Minister Atul Bora, who led the proceedings, lauded Chetry as “a source of inspiration for the youth of Assam.”
Senior officials, including the Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent of Police, and Sub-Divisional Officer, along with representatives from over 100 local organisations, attended the felicitation.
The celebration not only honoured Chetry’s achievement but also reflected the growing prominence of women athletes from Assam on the national stage. The state government’s grant stands as a strong message of encouragement for emerging sports talents across the region.
