New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday declined to entertain the petition filed by Punjab MP Amritpal Singh challenging his detention under the National Security Act (NSA) in 2023.
A bench of Justices Aravind Kumar and N.V. Anjaria granted Singh liberty to approach the jurisdictional High Court for relief, observing that the matter should be considered within six weeks due to the extended duration of his detention.
“We are requesting the High Court to dispose of it expeditiously, preferably within six weeks,” the bench stated during the hearing.
Additional Solicitor General S.V. Raju, appearing for the Centre, presented the government’s position before the court.
Singh, leader of the outfit Waris Punjab De, has remained in custody since his detention under the NSA during a statewide crackdown in 2023. His petition challenges the legality and continued validity of the detention order.
