Opposition Parties Join Hands in Assam to Oust BJP in 2026 Assembly Elections

Guwahati: In a major political realignment ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly elections, the Indian National Congress has brought together seven opposition parties under one umbrella to challenge the ruling BJP and remove Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma from power.

A high-level meeting was held today at the Congress Legislature Party office in the Assam Legislative Assembly, chaired by APCC President MP Gaurav Gogoi and attended by AICC General Secretary in charge of Assam Jitendra Singh. Representatives from Raijor Dal, Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), Anchalik Gana Morcha, CPM, CPI, CPI(ML) and APHLC participated in the meeting, which lasted nearly two hours.

Addressing the press after the meeting, Gaurav Gogoi announced that all parties had reached a consensus to form an anti-BJP alliance aimed at restoring democracy and ending “misrule, corruption, and oppression” in the state. Jitendra Singh described the alliance as “a united stand for justice, equality, and the people of Assam.”
