Gauhati High Court Seeks Detailed SIT Progress Report in Zubeen Garg Death Probe

The Gauhati High Court has directed the government to file a detailed progress report on the Special Investigation Team’s ongoing probe into the circumstances surrounding the death of singer Zubeen Garg. The order was passed during a hearing of a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by social activists Abhijeet Sharma and Palash Ranjan Baruah, who appeared before a Division Bench comprising Justice Michael Zothankhuma and Justice Mital Thakuria.

Registered as PIL/46/2025, the petition lists several Union ministries, including Home Affairs, External Affairs, Tourism, DONER, and Culture, in addition to the Government of Assam, the Indian High Commissioner in Singapore, Trend MMS Pvt. Ltd., Shyamkanu Mahanta, and Siddharth Sharma as respondents. Senior Advocate K. N. Choudhary represented the petitioners and presented the submissions before the court.

During the proceedings, the court instructed the authorities to submit a comprehensive update on the SIT investigation by 17 December 2025, a direction welcomed by the petitioners, who said the order ensures that any lapses or shortcomings in the probe will be brought under judicial scrutiny. The Bench also observed the unusually low turnout before the Justice Saikia Inquiry Commission, noting that such circumstances had posed challenges even for a sitting High Court judge in carrying forward the inquiry.

The court further ordered that all PILs related to the case be heard together, with Senior Advocate Choudhary scheduled to lead arguments in the upcoming hearings.
