Tripura Congress Accuses Centre of Attempting to Erase Nehru’s Legacy on His 136th Birth Anniversary

Tripura Congress President Asish Kumar Saha on Friday, November 14, accused those in power of attempting to distort India’s history and undermine the sacrifices of the nation’s freedom fighters. His remarks came during a programme held at the Congress Bhavan in Agartala to mark the 136th birth anniversary of Bharat Ratna Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first Prime Minister.

Senior leaders including former minister and MLA Sudip Roy Barman, MLA Gopal Chandra Roy, and several party workers joined Saha in paying tributes to Nehru, whose birth anniversary is celebrated nationwide as Children’s Day.

Speaking to reporters after the event, Saha said the Tripura Congress offered heartfelt homage to Nehru, recalling his affection for children and his belief that the nation’s future rested with them. He added that Nehru’s vision and policies, including the introduction of Five-Year Plans, laid the foundation for modern India and helped position the country on the global stage.

Saha asserted that Nehru not only shaped India’s development trajectory but also made immense personal sacrifices as a freedom fighter, enduring imprisonment during the struggle for independence. He alleged that a “conspiracy” was now underway to erase this history and diminish the contributions of leaders who shaped the nation, including attempts to undermine the Constitution drafted by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar.

Without naming the RSS or BJP, Saha said forces in power were trying to erase the legacy of freedom fighters. He emphasised that the Congress was committed to uniting citizens to resist attempts to distort historical facts and divide society, while continuing to uphold the principles championed by the country’s founding leaders.
