Kuki-Zo Leadership Adopts Nampi Conclave Declaration to Push Unified UT Demand

The Kuki-Zo political and civil leadership adopted the Nampi Conclave Declaration, a charter outlining the community’s collective political aspirations and mechanisms for stronger institutional coordination. The conclave was held from 14–15 November under the theme “Unity in Action: Securing Land, Legislature, and Future for the Kuki-Zo People,” and brought together representatives from bodies including the Kuki Zo Council, Zomi Council, Kuki Students’ Organisation, Kuki Inpi, Kuki Chief Association, elected MLAs, SoO groups and domain experts.

Issued jointly by the United Peoples’ Front (UPF) and the Kuki National Organisation (KNO), the declaration consolidated the political objectives of participating groups and sought to bring key Kuki-Zo institutions under a unified framework. The community’s long-standing demand for a Union Territory with a Legislature remained central to the resolutions.

The conclave resolved to form a central Working Group to enable continued political coordination among the KNO, UPF and civil bodies. It also recommended the centralisation of mobilisation efforts under the Kuki-Zo Council, replacing the previously scattered approach.

A significant decision was the creation of a Unified Political Movement Working Committee, designated as the sole representative platform for the UPF and KNO in discussions with the Government of India. The committee will lead negotiations, consultations and all formal engagements on political demands.

The declaration further emphasised the need for constitutional measures to address long-standing grievances, including those linked to displacement and conflict. Leaders reaffirmed sustained mobilisation in support of the Union Territory demand until a response is received from the Centre.

The conclave also decided to observe 3 May annually as “Separation Day,” marking a key moment in the community’s recent history.

The Nampi Conclave is being viewed as an important step towards unifying diverse Kuki-Zo groups and streamlining political processes as they prepare for future dialogue with the Union Government.
