RGU Honours Zubeen Garg with Book Launch, Scholarship & Memoriam

Guwahati: The Assam Royal Global University (RGU) today honoured Assam’s beloved cultural icon Zubeen Garg with the launch of a commemorative book, a scholarship, and a memoriam celebrating his enduring artistic legacy. The programme, held under the Dr Bhupen Hazarika Centre for Creativity, marked the birth anniversary of the legendary singer whose music continues to inspire generations.

The event was graced by RGU Chancellor Dr. A.K. Pansari; Vice Chancellor Prof. A.K. Buragohain; Chair of the Centre, Prof. Amarjyoti Choudhury; Executive Editor of The Assam Tribune Shri Ramanuj Dutta Choudhury; and Zubeen Garg’s sister, Dr. Palme Borthakur, along with faculty, students and dignitaries. A stirring Sattriya performance by Prerona Bhuyan and a soulful musical medley by RGU students added to the emotional atmosphere.

The commemorative book, “Zubeen: Twenty Songs and Seven Portraits”, edited by Sattyakee D’com Bhuyan, features translations of twenty of Zubeen’s iconic songs by Arkupal Ra Acharya, photographs by Stephen Styris, and essays by noted writers including Prof. Amarjyoti Choudhury, Mitra Phukan, Dr. Rakhee Kalita Moral and others. The cover has been designed by Muku Madhav Baishya. The memoriam, “Zubeen: the Road, the Music, the Life Perspectives”, includes nine essays by RGU faculty, edited by Dr. Pronami Bhattacharyya.

Welcoming the audience, Prof. Choudhury hailed Zubeen Garg as a symbol of passion, inclusivity and artistic brilliance. Chancellor Dr. Pansari described Zubeen as a cultural phenomenon who touched millions, adding that RGU’s newly launched scholarship and publications will inspire future artists. Sharing reflections, Shri Ramanuj Dutta Choudhury praised the singer’s deep cultural impact, while Dr. Palme Borthakur offered a moving tribute to her brother’s compassion, creativity and enduring legacy.
