World Boxing Championships: Lovlina Exits Early, Nikhat, Jaismine Shine

New Delhi: India’s campaign at the inaugural World Boxing Championships saw contrasting fortunes on Saturday as Olympic bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain bowed out early, while Nikhat Zareen and others powered through with commanding victories.

Lovlina, competing in the women’s 75kg category, suffered a 0–5 defeat against Turkey’s Busra Isildar in her opening bout, marking a disappointing end to her comeback after a year-long gap. Sharing her emotions in a heartfelt post, the Tokyo Olympics medallist admitted the loss “hurts deeply,” but vowed resilience. “No matter what—I promise, I will rise again. I will fight in any situation,” she wrote, while renewing her call for better training facilities.

In the men’s 70kg event, Hitesh Gulia also fell short, losing 1–4 to Robert Bos of the Netherlands.

The spotlight, however, belonged to two-time world champion Nikhat Zareen, who returned in style. Competing in the women’s 51kg division, she dismantled USA’s Jennifer Lozano with a 5–0 verdict, reaffirming her dominance on the global stage.

Adding to India’s wins, Jaismine Lamboria (57kg) cruised past Ukraine’s Daria-Olha Hutarina with a unanimous 5–0 decision, while heavyweight Narender Berwal (90+kg) beat Ireland’s Martin McDonagh 4–1.

India has fielded a 20-member squad in the tournament, organized under the newly formed World Boxing Council. Later in the day, Sachin (men’s 60kg) was slated to face Jacob Cassar of Australia, and Sanju (women’s 60kg) to take on Poland’s Aneta Rygielska.
