Elderly Man Dies in Guwahati House Fire

Guwahati: An 89-year-old man, Dharmeshwar Bania, died after a fire broke out at a rented residence in Guwahati’s Hengerabari area on Saturday afternoon, 29 November.

The incident occurred at around 1.30pm, when the blaze rapidly engulfed the house where Bania lived with his daughter and her two children. Neighbours said the fire spread swiftly, giving little time for any response. Reports indicated that no other family members were present at the time, as the residence had been locked from outside due to Bania’s age.

The family had been living in the rented house for nearly one-and-a-half years.

An official from the Fire and Emergency Services Station said the fire caused extensive damage, estimating losses at around ₹5 lakh. He added that three vehicles were also damaged in the incident.

Firefighters brought the flames under control, but Bania succumbed at the scene. The cause of the fire has not yet been established, and an investigation has been initiated.

Further details are awaited.
