Guwahati: The Assam Sahitya Sabha on Tuesday announced that Assam University will soon introduce a full-fledged Department of Assamese Language, following formal approval from the University Grants Commission (UGC). Sabha president Dr. Basanta Kumar Goswami made the announcement during the centenary celebrations of Chandrakanta Handique Bhawan in Jorhat, where a two-day programme opened with cultural events and strong public participation.
Goswami noted that a time once existed when Assamese had limited academic space at the university. “Today, with UGC’s support, a dedicated department is coming up. This is a proud moment for every language lover,” he said.
In a significant cultural initiative, the Sabha also declared the creation of two academic chairs at Assam University in honour of Lakshminath Bezbaruah and Padmanath Gohain Baruah. The celebrations began with the ceremonial hoisting of 100 flags, floral tributes to Zubeen Garg and Bhupen Hazarika, and a colourful procession showcasing Assam’s diverse communities.
